Musayelyan to export Armenian Latin jazz

Armenian-Russian flutist Yulia Musayelyan has been in the spotlight with her atypical blend of Armenian folk, Argentinian chacarera and jazz improvisation. The World program on BBC will feature Musayelyan and her debut album, Caminos, released on the Blue Music Group label. Musayelyan has in recent years explored her roots by playing folkloric instruments as well as concert flutes. Her band consists of fellow Armenian, pianist Vardan Ovsepian, bassist Fernando Huergo and drummer Franco Pinna. The ensemble will make a special performance at the Armenian Library in Watertown, Massachusetts on Friday December 4.

Yulia Musayelyan was born in Moscow, Russia, where she began her music studies at the age of 4 with Valery Brainin and later at the Gnessin School of Music for gifted children. She has extensive experience in the classical, contemporary, jazz and world music genres. She is a 2001 recipient of the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts Award and the National Merit Foundation scholarship award, as well as winner of the 2004 Lillian Fuchs Chamber competition. She has recorded with artists of several genres such as Marta Gómez, Marta Topferova, Vardan Ovsepian Chamber Ensemble, Fernando Huergo Quintet, and several others. She has toured the US, UK, Europe, Central and South America with various musical projects. In 2005, she was a soloist with the TACTUS Contemporary Ensemble with guest conductor Pierre Boulez in the performance of L'explosante Fixe for three flutes, ensemble, and electronics.
